“…Although no one understood we were holding back the flood,
Learning how to dance the rain.
We were holding back the flood they said we’d never dance again…”
That is a piece of one of the latest song from Take That, The Flood, a song that I currently listening to during worktime. Taken into the detail of the lyrics, I presume this song is all about managing prejudice and making proof to the world, more or less something that happened on Take That.
Managing expectation is somewhat a big issue for many people, especially for today’s life where sincerity is a premium thing to find among civilization. Prejudice then become the best way for people to get to know each other, and leaving our common sense to take control - we have already spotted people with labels. This leads us to a condition of modern life - a life in judgment and labels. Some people even already mention it and become such a tantric mantra like “you are what you wear” “you are what you eat” “you are what you stand for”, and so many more.
Bring it to the formal academic review, Maslow even already mapped it on his famous hierarcghy of needs. Showing that people put the needs of self esteem - social status - is a phase in this hierarchy of needs. Phase, this theory define this level of needs comes as a phase, in which certain level will come after the lower level fulfilled. But as the growing tendency of prejudice, can we still think that this still apply? Aren’t we in today’s world tend to judge people at a very first, which lead us trying to satisfy others’ perpesctive prior to our basic needs?
Few days ago, I have just had a great highschool reunion. And somehow this kind of prejudice thing still happen, even among my highschool friends whom I consider have a very broad and modern perspective. Not to mention that I was also drag into the situation. The reunion event soon start becoming an event of intimidating for some people ~ I presume from their eye ~ as the rituals of every reunion - asking “How’s life?” happened. SOme of us who’s not lucky or not having a fancy job as others will soon felt outperform to others. Some even start to think that they’re “not as good as others”, and TWEET IT! For a few moments, I also felt quite the same thing, comparing to others, labeling myself and my friends, setting parameters. But then I realize… Why should be?
Why should you become embarassed of anything that you achieve, though is not as big as others. It is still an achievement that you made yourself, and no one will really know the detailed phase for you to achieve such thing. Whether it’s only a jobless - situation for others’ perspective, or graduating late from university, but no one will really know your complete story.
So as Take That said in their songs - The Flood -” no one would understand…”. Yes no one would understand, and why bother to make others understand as well. It is something that you should regain for yourself to get a kind of inner peace like what Xiao Po manage to in Kung Fu Panda.
So, keep it low, stop trying to make others understand for only a good label of yours. Because, no one will understand.
And anyway, your inner peace and happiness matters more than all of that, aite ?!
